APTi Materials Roundtable: Carbon Fiber Fabric and its Potential for Use in Conservation Treatments

Carbon fiber fabric is a high-performance woven cloth made from carbon filament, designed to be used in concert with a resin system to create a rigid, strong, and light weight structure conforming to almost any shape. This presentation will provide an overview of the material’s history, manufacture, and properties, followed by examples of its use in the Department of Objects Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Carolyn Riccardelli is a conservator in the Department of Objects Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is responsible for structural issues related to large-scale objects, including marble sculpture, mosaics, and architectural terracotta. Her work with carbon fiber fabric is presented in the Objects Specialty Group Postprints, Vol. 24, 2017.
